Take yourself back in time, if you will, to a year when Reagan ran the Whitehouse, Thatcher was at Number 10, and the world was a simpler place. No Islamic extremism, no neo-con conspiracy, no 9/11, Madrid, Bali or London bombings. Al-Qaeda was but a figment of Donald Rumsfeld's fevered imagination that he had yet to fabricate, and the only time anyone had heard of blue tongue was after eating an icepop. Step into this time a Tory MP who, on the surface appears to represent all that is right and proper. Education, family values, a moral fibre and ethical backbone that none could doubt or chastise. But in reality, behind closed doors, his is a world of deceit, duplicity and back stabbing. Welcome to the world of Alan B'Stard. Rik Mayall's exemplary performance as the arch-evil B'stard is first rate, and the supporting characters are equally effective. Yes, it's all a bit silly, a bit OTT and feels very dated now, but some of the gags apply just as easily to New Labour as they ever did to the Tories. Watch and squirm, as the reality kicks in - history does repeat itself.
